Why Belong to Freedom
What
is a Credit Union?
A credit union
is a financial institution that provides high-quality financial services
at a more reasonable cost than conventional banks and other institutions.
Credit unions differ from banks in that they are not-for-profit
cooperative organizations, owned equally by all of their members. Any
money made above the cost of operations is returned to the members in the
form of better rates on deposits, better loan rates, and lower fees. This
is made possible by the fact that credit unions are not required to pay
dividends to stockholders. In a credit union, a member is an owner,
shareholder, and customer all rolled into one!
Since their
emergence, credit unions have evolved from simple saving and lending
institutions for industrial workers to full-service financial institutions
that provide affordable service to people in all types of businesses and
organizations. Whatever the field, from education to electronics, medicine
to mechanics, your employees and their families can enjoy the money-saving
services that a credit union can provide.
What is Freedom
Credit Union?
Freedom Credit Union (FCU) is a full service financial institution with
over $260 million in assets and over 56,000 members. Originally
chartered in 1934 to provide financial service to employees of The School
District of Philadelphia, today FCU serves over 250 organizations in the Delaware
Valley. Some of the organizations that utilize FCU are Thomas Jefferson University, the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia, ABB Inc. (formerly Bailey-Fischer and
Porter), Albert Einstein Medical Center, Montgomery County School District, and Pepsi Co, Inc. A full
list of Freedom Credit Union’s member organizations is available
here.
FCU offers a
full line of convenience-oriented banking services including VISA Check
Cards and credit cards, ATM access, free Telephone and Online Banking, and
Bill Payer services. However, unlike a bank, FCU’s Board of Directors and
managers work for the members to provide the best array of services
possible - at an affordable cost. Since FCU members are also owners,
their needs always come first. That is why you will find that FCU offers
some services not available at other financial institutions such as
children’s accounts, special “members only” car sales, and discounts.
All FCU
accounts are also fully insured to at least $100,000 by the
National Credit Union Administration, a federal agency.

How to Become an FCU Member Organization
Organizations located in Bucks,
Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia counties that do not currently offer credit union membership to their
employees may be eligible to become member organizations of Freedom Credit
Union. Here’s how you can help your organization get started:
- Ask a “decision-maker” if your organization currently offers a
credit union to the employees/members. For large organizations, contact
a human resources representative, benefits manager, or payroll manager.
For smaller organizations, contact your owner or office manager.
- If they do not,
contact Freedom Credit Union’s
Marketing Department to request a free information packet and a personal
presentation of the credit union’s services.

How Your Organization Benefits
Free
- Freedom Credit union is a benefit that you can offer to your employees
at no cost to your organization. There are no worries about working
another expense into your operating costs or having to pass these costs
onto your employees. FCU develops promotional materials and periodic
mailings about credit union services for your employees - at no cost to
you! Members receive their monthly statements directly from FCU.
Convenient
- Unlike many employee benefits, you can offer the credit union without
weighing down your staff with time-consuming administrative duties. An
FCU representative will be available at your convenience for periodic
visits to your location to enroll new members or answer questions about
services. Affiliating with FCU can even lighten your organization’s
workload. By offering Direct Deposit through FCU, you can greatly reduce
the number of employee checks you must produce each pay cycle.
Morale Building
- Costly fees, high credit card rates, and impersonal financial services
can be a drain on your employees and a drain on your organization’s
productivity. Offering credit union membership is a great way to show
your employees that you care about their financial well-being. Also,
prospective employees will see that you want to offer them the best
benefits package possible.
Time
Saving - Members can access
their accounts 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with FCU’s full line of
remote access services. With the extensive
ATM network, Telephone Teller, Online Banking through the Internet,
and the VISA Check Card, your employees can get to their funds any time,
at their own convenience. With Direct Deposit, payday is worry-free, as
your employees work knowing their pay is sent directly to their accounts.
