What is Verified by
Visa?
Verified by Visa is an
online security program designed to protect the online shopper. The program
requires the cardholder to use a password for online card purchases from
participating online merchants. This password will validate the identity of
the cardholder and verifies that he/she is the true owner of the Visa card
during the purchase.
TOP
Why is Verified by
Visa necessary?
Verified by Visa was created to improve the
security of purchases made via the Internet utilizing a Visa card. It
enables merchants to authenticate the cardholder at the time of the
purchase.
TOP
How much does
Verified by Visa cost?
Verified by Visa is a free service to
Freedom Credit Union credit cardholders.
TOP
Is this
authentication process fail-safe?
No. This program will
drastically reduce online fraud but will not eliminate online fraud.
Cardholders must still make every effort to secure their PINs, passwords and
personal information. Verified by Visa may not prevent fraud if, for
example:
-
A cardholder loses
their card which has their online password written on it. A thief then
may then use the card to make a purchase. Or,
-
A perpetrator
fraudulently registers a cardholder’s card and makes online purchases. Or,
-
A family member or
other household guest discovers the cardholder’s card and password and
uses the information to make unauthorized purchases.
TOP How do I
register my card for Verified by Visa?
The first time you make a purchase online with
a merchant that is participating in Verified by Visa, a “pop up” window will
appear that will instruct you to register your card. You will be asked to
provide personal information that will validate your identity for
registration purposes only. Once your identity has been verified you will
be asked to select your password. You will need to completely register
your card before the purchase will continue.
To register your card in advance, you may
go to the Verified by VISA page
on our website or visit
www.verifiedbyvisa.com.
TOP
What kind of questions will I be asked?
You will be asked to supply:
Signature Panel Code (CVV2) (Found on the
back of your card)
Expiration Date
Last 4 digits of your social security number
Last 4 digits of you home telephone number
TOP
What is the
Signature Panel Code / CVV2?
The Signature Panel Code/CVV2 is the series
of three digits printed in the signature area on the back of your Visa card.
TOP
What is the password hint?
A password hint is a question to help you
remember your password. You may create a password hint when you register at
www.verifiedbyvisa.com. You may refer to it in case you forget or lose
your password. This hint is presented when you enter your password
incorrectly 3 times.
TOP
What is the
personal message?
When you register at
www.verifiedbyvisa.com, you will be asked to create a Personal Message
as the last step in your Verified by Visa registration. Your Personal
Message appears in your password screen when you make purchases. When the
Verified by Visa window appears during the purchase process you should
always check to see that your Personal Message appears correctly. This
confirms that it's an authentic Verified by Visa window.
TOP
Once my card is registered,
how long
does it take for Verified by Visa to become active?
Once the registration is complete, Verified by
Visa will be activated for shopping online at a participating merchant.
TOP
Will I have
to register every time I make a purchase?
No. Once you are registered, the only
noticeable change in your Internet shopping routine will be entering your
password when you make a purchase at a participating online retailer.
TOP
What happens if my
identity cannot be
validated during enrollment?
If, for some reason, the cardholder cannot
be verified by the information provided, an on-screen message will instruct
you to contact Visa’s Customer Service. For credit card users,
Customer Service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at
1-800-813-4977.
TOP
Is my
personal information protected?
Visa and Freedom Credit Union are taking
extensive precautions to secure the personal information you provide.
This information is only used to verify your identity and is transmitted
using a high level of data encryption.
TOP
What happens if I
forget my password?
The cardholder is given 5 attempts to
correctly enter his or her password. If you have created a password hint,
this hint will be presented to you after your third incorrect attempt.
This is a question to help you remember your password. If you still cannot
remember the password after the fifth attempt, you will receive instructions
to contact Visa customer service to request a new password. You will then
need to re-register your card with Verified by Visa. At this time, the
merchant with whom you were attempting to make a transaction may ask for a
new method of payment or refuse to proceed with the sale.
TOP
Can the
same password be used for all Visa
cards I own?
Yes. Your Visa
Check Card and your Visa Credit Card can have the same password. It is
up to the cardholder to choose the password for each account.
TOP

use my PIN as a password?
No. The password must be between 6
and 10 characters long, with no spaces. You may use letters, numbers,

participating online stores, your card number will automatically be
recognized and the Verified by Visa password window will appear. Your
password will be required to complete the transaction.

in Verified by Visa?
